I've been subscribing the newspaper, "The Statesman" since two decades. Just a week ago while reading an article on digital media, I encountered a sentence ...."Web logs became an immensely popular way for ordinary citizens to update the world about their lives and views." Immediately the sentence caught my attention and I hunched that the two-word phrase must have some relation with the word blogs. A couple of hours research proved that my hunch stood vindicated. Let me come to the point. What a blog is ?
Blog is a portmanteau of web and log, blending the sounds and combining the meanings of two others e.g. Motel, Brunch etc.
Epistemologically, let us analyze the advent of the term blog. Blogs have come a long way since December 17, 1997 when John Barger coined the term "weblog" to describe the list of links on his Robot Wisdom website that logged his internet wanderings.
The dictionary meaning of Blog - A regularly updated website or web page, typically one, run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.
The short form blog was coined by Peter Merholz who jokingly broke the word weblog into the phrase "we blog" in the sidebar of his blog Peterm.com in April or May 1999.
