A man who made us laugh
প্রবীণ অভিনেতা গোবর্ধন আসরানি, যাঁর হাস্যরস, অনবদ্য সময়জ্ঞান এবং অবিস্মরণীয় পর্দা-উপস্থিতি আমার মতো লক্ষ লক্ষ মানুষের হৃদয়ে স্থায়ী স্থান করে নিয়েছে, তিনি আর নেই।
দীর্ঘ অসুস্থতার পর তিনি মুম্বাইয়ে মারা গেলেন। তাঁর বয়স হয়েছিল ৮৪ বছর। ভারতীয় চলচ্চিত্র জগৎ তার অন্যতম প্রিয়, একজনকে দীপাবলির দিনটিতে বিদায় জানালো।
আসরানির সাফল্য এসেছিল একাধিক কমিক চরিত্রের মাধ্যমে যা নানান আঙ্গিকের বুদ্ধিমত্তার মিশ্রণের অনন্য ক্ষমতা প্রদর্শন করেছিল। তবে কিংবদন্তি ছবি "শোলে"-তে জেলার-এর চরিত্র তাঁর নাম চিরকালের জন্য সিনেমার ইতিহাসে খোদাই করে রাখবে। "জেল মে সুরঙ্গ....হাম আংরেজোঁ কা জামানে কে জেলর" স্মরণীয় লাইনটি- এই ডায়ালগ আমাদের মতো চলচ্চিত্র প্রেমিদের মধ্যে প্রায়ই প্রতিধ্বনিত হয়। আমি আমার যৌবনে ভীষন রকমই সিনেমাপ্রেমী ছিলাম এবং ৬০ বছর বয়স পর্যন্ত সেই অভ্যাস অব্যাহত ছিল। আমি শোলে ছবিটি ৩ বার প্রশস্ত পর্দায় যাকে বলে জায়ান্ট স্ক্রিন-এ, এবং ভিসিআর,বা ভিডিও ক্যাসেট রেকর্ডারে বেশ কয়েকবার দেখেছি। আসরানিজীর এই বিশেষ সংলাপটি আমার মনে গেঁথে আছে।
আসরানি সাহেবের অভিনয়ের মুন্সিয়ানায় তাঁর স্বতন্ত্র পদচিহ্ন রেখে গেছেন এবং এই একমাত্র ও অনন্য দিকটি প্রতিভাবান একজন চরিত্রশিল্পীর সবচয়ে বড় স্বাক্ষর। আমি তাঁর নাম ও বাঙালি কৌতুকাভিনেতা তুলসী চক্রবর্তীর মতো একজন কৌতুকাভিনেতাকে একই আসনের মর্যাদায় রাখব। ওঁর আত্মা শান্তিতে থাকুক।

The world of Indian cinema bids farewell to one of its most beloved, enduring figures, on the day of Deepavali. He passed away in Mumbai after a prolonged illness. He was 84.
Asrani's breakthrough came with a series of comic roles that showcased his unique ability to blend wit with relatibiliity. But it was his role as the jailor in the legendary film SHOLAY that forever etched his name in cinematic history. The memorable line, "Jail mei Soorang....Hum Angrezon ka zamaane ke Jailor", continues to echo through the corridors of film lore. I was a film buff in my youth that continued till I was 60 years old. And I saw the movie in wide screen 3 times and in VCR, Video cassette recorder a number of times. This particular dialogue from the move remais etched in my mind.
Asrani sab left his distinct footprints and that's the sign of someone unique, secured and talented. I reserve his name in the same pedestal as Bengali comedian Tulshi Chakraborty. I wish his soul rest in peace.
