U K Prime Minister designate Rishi Sunak

UK Prime Minister designate Rishi Sunak

Rishi Sunak becoming UK PM, has created a lot of flutter among the Indians  both in India and elsewhere, the euphoria is going to be dissipated soon. It fascinates many Indians in India and Indian diaspora elsewhere in the world. The reason may be, that he's a practicing Hindu, becoming Prime Minister of the former colonial power that once ruled India. That's all- the only "feel-good" factor.

Coming to his job, in my assessment, he has nothing to lose and everything to GAIN from the situation that has pitchforked him to the country's top job. UK's economy is in the doldrums, inflation has reached record levels, and energy crisis looms, particularly as the winter is knocking at the door. The skyrocketing food price and energy forcing increasing number of families to choose between  eating and heating. From this state, Sunak's supporters could well believe that from here there's no place to go but up. However, if Tories led by Sunak survive for next six months, he will complete the term till the next general election due in 2024.

Finally, it is not understood how India is going to be in a favourable position for Sunak's elevation to UK's Prime Ministerial berth. A comparison readily comes in mind- how Kamala Harris as the US Vice President was of additional help to India or the Indian diaspora in that country, except for that "feel-good" factor !!
