৫ জুন ২০২৪ বোয়িংয়ের নতুন স্টারলাইনার ক্রু ক্যাপসুল উৎক্ষেপণের মাত্র এক সপ্তাহের মধ্যে  দুই মহাকাশচারী, সুনীতা উইলিয়ামস ও বুচ উইলমোর-এর ফিরে আসার কথা ছিল। কিন্ত মহাকাশ স্টেশনে যাওয়ার পথে এত সমস্যা দেখা দেয় যে নাসা অবশেষে স্টারলাইনারকে খালি ফেরত নিয়ে আসে এবং পরীক্ষামূলক পাইলটদের স্পেসএক্সে স্থানান্তর করে, যার ফলে তাদের স্বদেশ প্রত্যাবর্তনের প্রস্তুতি পর্ব ফেব্রুয়ারি ২০২৫-এ শুরু হয়।

বুচ উইলমোর এবং সুনীতা তাঁদের বিগত ন'মাসের বাসস্থানকে বিদায় জানিয়ে ইলন মাস্ক সংস্থা নির্মিত স্পেসএক্স ক্যাপসুলে চড়ে ২/৩ দিন আগে পৃথিবীর দিকে রওনা দিয়েছিলেন। সঙ্গে ছিলেন আরও দুই মহাকাশচারী, নিক হেগ এবং আলেকজান্ডার গ্রেবিওঙ্কিন।

আবহাওয়া অনুকূল থাকার ফলে ক্যাপসুলটি একেবারেই নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে (স্থানীয় সময় সন্ধ্য ৫.৫৭) আটলান্টিকের ফ্লোরিডা উপকূলে চারটি প্যারাসুটের সাহায্যে ভারসাম্য বজায় রেখে স্প্ল্যাশডাউন করে।

তাঁদের দুর্দশা বিশ্বের দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করে, এবং "কাজে আটকে থাকা", এই বাক্যাংশটিকে নতুন অর্থ দেয়। যদিও অন্যান্য মহাকাশচারীরা কয়েক দশক ধরে দীর্ঘ মহাকাশ ভ্রমণ করেছিলেন, তবুও কাউকে এত অনিশ্চয়তার মুখোমুখি হতে হয়নি বা তাদের মিশনের দৈর্ঘ্য এত বেশি বাড়তে দেখেননি।

উইলমোর এবং উইলিয়ামস স্পেস স্টেশনের সাময়িক অতিথি থেকে শেষ পর্যন্ত পূর্ণাঙ্গ স্টেশন ক্রু সদস্যে রূপান্তরিত হন। অনেক পরীক্ষা-নিরীক্ষা পরিচালনা করেন, সরঞ্জাম মেরামত করেন, এমনকি একসাথে মহাকাশে হাঁটাহাঁটিও করেন। নয়টি স্পেসওয়াকের উপর ৬২ ঘন্টা সময় ব্যয় করে সুনীতা মহিলা নভোচারীদের মধ্যে ক্যারিয়ারে সর্বাধিক সময় মহাকাশে হাঁটার একটি রেকর্ড স্থাপন করেন।

Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams bid farewell to the International Space Station, their home since last spring, departing aboard a SpaceX capsule alongside two other astronauts, Nick Hague and Alexandre Grabionkin.

The capsule undocked in the wee hours and aimed for a splashdown off the Florida coast by early evening, local time, weather permitting.

The two astronauts expected to be gone just a week or so after launching on Boeing's new Starliner crew capsule on 5 June, 2024. So many problems cropped up on the way to the space station that NASA eventually sent Starliner back empty and transferred the test pilots to SpaceX, pushing their homecoming into February this year. 

Their plight captured the world's attention, giving new meaning to the phrase "stuck at work." While other astronauts had logged longer spaceflights over the decades, none had to deal with so much uncertainty or see the length of their mission expand by so much.

Wilmore and Williams quickly transitioned from guests to full-fledged station crew members, conducting experiments, fixing equipment and even spacewalking together. With 62 hours over nine spacewalks, Williams set a record: the most time spent  spacewalking over a career among female astronauts.
