                   স্বাক্ষরতা বনাম প্রকৃত শিক্ষিত 

অনেক বছর আগে যখন ফ্ল্যাটবাড়ির বাসিন্দা হই, তখন সুবিধে-অসুবিধের কথা ভেবে, মনে হয়েছিল ফ্ল্যাট বাড়িতে থাকা বেশ নিরাপদ এবং সুবিধের। মাসে-মাসে রক্ষণাবেক্ষণের টাকাটা চুকিয়ে দিলেই ল্যাটা চুকে গেল। সেই সময় আমার পুরোনো পাড়ার ২/১ জন বন্ধু বলেছিল, "ফ্ল্যাট সিস্টেমের বাড়িগুলো এক-একটা vertical slum, মানে উল্লম্ব বস্তিবিশেষ। খেয়োখেয়ি ঝগড়া লেগেই থাকে। । সংকীর্ণ স্বার্থের জন্য মানুষ অনেক নিচে নামতে পারে। একটু আঘাত পেয়েছিলাম। আজ ৪০/৪২  বছর পরে এসে বন্ধুর কথা মনে পড়ে গেল যে, সে কতটা দূরদর্শী ছিল। হালের কিছু অভিজ্ঞতার কথা ভাগ করে নেওয়া যাক। 

 আর্থিক উপার্জনের তারতম্যে মধ্যবিত্ত এবং উচ্চ মধ্যবিত্ত শ্রেণীর মানুষেরাই সাধারণত ফ্ল্যাট বাড়িতে বসবাস করেন। উচ্চ মধ্যবিত্তের মধ্যে অর্থনৈতিক বৈষম্যের তফাত ঊনিশ-বিশের। কিন্ত যাঁরা অর্থনৈতিক কৌলিন্যে সামান্য এগিয়ে থাকেন তাঁদের শরীরী ভাষা এবং কথ্য ভাষার ঝাঁঝ এতই কদর্য যে আবাসনের মিটিং-এ প্রতিবেশীর অনিচ্ছাকৃত অসাবধানতায় সংলগ্ন ফ্ল্যাটের সামান্য ক্ষতির জন্য যে কুৎসিত ভাষায় আক্রমণ শানানো যায়, তা না শুনলে বিশ্বাস করা যায় না।

আমার মনে হয় অর্থের বিস্তার চিন্তার পরিধিকে ছোট করে আনে, মননের পরিধিকে খর্ব করে। আরও একটা ব্যাপার লক্ষ্য করেছি যে তথাকথিত আলোকপ্রাপ্ত সমাজের থেকে উঠে আসা সমাজের মানুষের অভদ্রতা ও অবজ্ঞার নিজস্ব ভাষা আছে। এই শেষের শ্রেণীভুক্ত হাতেগোনা মানুষগুলোর চালচলন দেখলে বুঝতে পারা যায় যে তাঁরা সবসময় প্রতিবেশীদের সঙ্গে তাঁদের অর্থনৈতিক স্বাচ্ছল্যের সাফল্যের  কথা ভেবে একটা গোপন প্রতিযোগিতা চালিয়ে যাচ্ছেন। ভাগ্যিস হাতেগোনা, তাই সমাজটা এখনও নরক হয়ে যায়নি।

এই হাতে গোনা বিত্তবান মানুষের বাড়িতে ঢুকলেই বুঝতে পারা যায় অর্থানুকুল্যের ছাপ এবং একই সঙ্গে দুর্গন্ধ। আধুনিক আসবাবপত্রে মোড়া। এমনকি ফ্ল্যাটের কিছুটা অংশ ফলস্ সিলিং-এর। তার অদৃশ্য ফাঁকফোঁকর দিয়ে ঠিকরে পড়ছে আলো। কিন্ত তাঁদের বাড়িতে বই রাখার কোনও আলমারি চোখে পড়ে না। দৈনিক খবরের কাগজও তাঁরা পড়েন বলে মনে হয় না। আসলে স্বাক্ষরতা, আর প্রকৃত শিক্ষিত মানসিকতার মধ্যে অনেক তফাত। সাক্ষর প্রায় সবাই, কিন্ত ক'জনই বা শিক্ষিত। কাগজে কলমে উচ্চ শিক্ষিত মানুষের সংখ্যা ঘরে ঘরে, কিন্ত তাঁরা কি প্রকৃত শিক্ষিত! Very few are educated, What we see most, are literate. এই ব্যাপারটা ঠিক বুদ্ধি দিয়ে বোঝা যায় না, বাহ্যিক ব্যবহারে এর প্রকাশ পাওয়া যায়। যে হাউজিং ফ্ল্যাটগুলো একটা বড় কমপ্লেক্সের মধ্যে আছে, তাদের বাসিন্দাদের মধ্যে এই ধরনের মানসিকতা চোখে পড়ে না। কিন্ত একটা ১০/১২/১৫/ বা ২০ আবাসিকদের আবাসনে এই ধরনের ঝামেলা লেগেই থাকে।

                    Educated vs Literate

Many years ago, when I lived in an apartment building, I thought about the pros and cons, and thought living in a self contained flat was quite safe and secured. As soon as my monthly dues are cleared, I felt peace in mind. At that time, a few of my friends of old neighborhood said, "The houses in the flat system are like vertical slums. There are constant quarrels. People can stoop very low for narrow interests." I was a little hurt. Today, after little more than four decades, I remembered my friend's words and how far-sighted they were. Let's share some recent experiences.

In terms of financial income, people from the middle and upper middle classes usually live in flats. The difference in economic inequality among the upper middle class is few and far between. But the body language and spoken language of those who are slightly ahead in economic status are so ugly that it is hard to believe the obnoxious and heated exchange among members used in housing meetings for minor damage to the adjacent flat due to unintentional carelessness of a neighbor.

Wealthy people are narrow minded in general. I think the wealth narrows down the thought process. Another thing I have noticed is that the people of the society that emerged from the so-called enlightened society have their own language of rudeness and contempt. If you look at the behavior of these handful of people belonging to this last category, you can understand that they are always carrying on a secret competition and showcases one upmanship with their neighbors, thinking about the success of their economic well-being. Fortunately, they are handful, so the society has not yet become hell.

As soon as you enter the homes of these few so called wealthy people, you can sense the impression of wealth and at the same time its stench. They are covered with modern furniture. Even some parts of the flats have false ceilings. Light shines through the invisible gaps. But there is no cupboard to keep books in their homes. They do not even seem to read the daily newspaper. In fact, there is a big difference between literacy and a truly educated mindset. Almost everyone is literate, but how many are educated? The number of highly educated people on paper and pen is in every house, but are they truly educated! Very few are educated, What we see, most are literate. This matter cannot be understood with the intellect, it is expressed in their apparent behavior.  This kind of mentality is not seen among the residents of housing flats that are in a large complex. But in a housing complex with 10/12/15/ or 20 residents, such problems persist.
